A surface skimmer is an absolute must, rather than an optional extra. This unit literally skims the top layer of water and removes leaves, dust, pollen and other debris floating on the pond surface. The most effective type of skimmer is built into the wall and so must be installed early on in the construction stage. An external pump then pulls the water through a strainer basket in the unit by drawing water into the mouth of the skimmer over a flap-type weir. Simply empty the strainer basket when necessary.
Alternative types of skimmer, such as Oase Swim Skim 25, Aqua Skim 40 and the Swim Skim CWS cater for existing ponds that require a surface skimmer. The Swim Skim 25 and CWS skimmers contain an integral pump and are free floating but can be tethered into position. The Aqua Skim 40 can also be fitted to an existing pond but requires an additional pump, like an Aquamax Eco 4000, to draw the water from the surface.
