How To Get Rid of Blanket WeedPublished: Wed, 24 Jun 2009
Blanket Weed or Green Filamentous Algae is a problem most pond keepers will have come across at sometime, this weed thrives in clear water clinging to all surfaces and choking other plants. It usually occurs when there is an excess of nutrients combined with sunlight creating ideal growing conditions and this weed can grow!
Contrary to popular belief there are no fish that eat the blanket weed, in fact it can prove fatal to fish like Sturgeon who can become entangled in it and 'drown'
Where possible a healthy balanced pond can reduce the chance of blanket weed getting a grip on a pond, for this we must reduce both light and nutrients by adding pond plants such as Elodea Densa, Elodea Crispa, pond lilies and marginal plants are also affective. These plants take in the 'spare' nutrients, and their foliage shades the water reducing the sunlight on the pond
If you already have a Blanket Weed problem and are unable to increase the plant stock for such reason's as your pond is too deep or your fish simply destroy them then a Blanket Weed Treatment may be the only alternative.
